DESCRIPTION OF FISHING
Species Sought/Availability: Bass, Peacock / Pavon - Availability: Abundant
Description of Catch Made: In six days of fishing specifically for big fish (large topwater baits), we caught about 120 peacocks, with about 15 of those over 10 lbs. Had several 18's, a 17 and three or four over 15 lbs. Caught a number of other species such as traira, aruana, cachorro and piranha.
Type of Fishing: Fished from custom designed 20' shallow draft skiffs with front and center casting platforms.
Equipment Used: Stout baitcasting rods with 50lb braided line.
Flies Used: Primarily heavy duty hand-tied 3/4 oz bucktail jigs in various colors, and Yo-Zuri 3/8 oz Floating Crystal Minnows in various colors. Also topwater Woodchoppers/Rip-Rollers.
Description of Hatches: Red/yellow colors with flash were particularly effective at most times. This applied to both the crankbaits/jigs, and I believe the flies used by others in our party.
Water/Weather Conditions: Water was clear, low and glassy - perfect conditions. Weather was hot. Rained twice at night, once
during the day for a half hour.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems on the Trip: Guide spoke very little English - made it difficult to understand and master the exact type of cast and retrieve necessary to attract the fish. Large fish snapped two rods!
Highlights of the Trip: Watching the most vicious strikes of any type of fish in the world, gorgeous sunsets, watching loud squawking parrots, macaws and toucans fly overhead, experiencing the immensity and isolation of the Amazon. Alejandro, our host, was extremely knowledgable, very interesting and personable, and spoke very good English.
Cost of the Trip: $3,850
Would You Recommend This Trip to a Friend? Yes
Why? Great fishing in a unique part of the world. I would make sure they understand that the trip is physically demanding. River Plate also uses a tent barge concept pulled by a shallow draft boat that allows access beyond sandbars and other river barriers. The camp was moved every other day or so, allowing us to fish new water without a long ride to get there.
Are There Non-Fishing Activities? No
If So, What Are They?
